Nicotina

Nicotine is highly addictive. Nicotine provides an almost immediate "kick" because it causes a discharge of epinephrine from the adrenal cortex. This stimulates the central nervous system, and other endocrine glands, which causes a sudden release of glucose. Stimulation is then followed by depression and fatigue, leading the smoker to seek more nicotine.

Nicotine and Adrenaline:
When a person inhales cigarette smoke, the nicotine in the smoke is rapidly absorbed into the blood and starts affecting the brain within 7 seconds. The result is the release of the hormone adrenaline, the "fight or flight" hormone. Physically, adrenaline will increase a person's heart rate, blood pressure and restrict flow to the heart muscle. The smoker will experience rapid, shallow breathing. Adrenaline also instructs the body to dump any excess glucose into the bloodstream.

Nicotine and Dopamine
Nicotine activates the same reward system as do other drugs of abuse such as cocaine or amphetamine, although to a lesser degree. Research has shown that nicotine increases the level of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is a chemical in the brain responsible for feelings of pleasure and well-being. The acute effects of nicotine wear off within minutes, so people continue dosing themselves frequently throughout the day to maintain the pleasurable effects of nicotine and to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

Cafeina

Caffeine is the Christian drug of preference. Drink a glass of red wine or light up a cigarette during Sunday Night Fellowship Hour, and you will be thrown out on your ear. But a two-hundred-gallon pot of black adrenal-rush will bring friendly smiles of delight. The meeting would not be the same with the absence of its nutty aroma filling the church basement. Little white Styrofoam cups floating in small clusters of heavenly conversation.

Coca Cola put cocaine in their drink at the turn of the century. It sold extremely well. Some consumers succumbed to the addictive quality of cocaine and started to drink undiluted Cola syrup. When cocaine was banned for use in soft drink the bottlers switched to caffeine.

It is estimated that in North America between 80 and 90 percent of adults and children habitually consume caffeine.

Até chocolate tem cafeina.

Students studying late at night don't realize that caffeine restricts the oxygen flow to their brain up to 30% and impairs memory retention. Under the guise of alertness, caffeine has fooled them into thinking they will be better prepared for their exams in the morning.

It may interest you to know why you get a headache when you skip your morning cup. Caffeine acts a as powerful vasoconstrictor in the brain. That is, it constricts blood vessels in the brain and decreases circulation and oxygen supply by up to 30%! When caffeine is not present, the sudden increased circulation causes headaches. While this keeps millions of people addicted to the caffeine habit, the good news is that you can avoid this pitfall by slowly weaning yourself off caffeine over a two to three week period.

Anorexia e Bulimia

Bulimia nervosa is characterized by cycles of bingeing and purging. Bulimia nervosa usually begins early in adolescence when young women attempt restrictive diets, fail, and react by binge eating. In response to the binges, patients purge by vomiting or by taking laxatives, diet pills, or drugs to reduce fluids. Patients may also revert to severe dieting, which cycles back to bingeing if the patient does not go on to become anorexic.

Having an eating disorder means being controlled by an obsession with food. It could mean being 60kgs overweight, planning diets which are regularly broken and living with feelings of shame, or a distorted body image, thinking that one is fat when, in fact, one is dangerously underweight. Having an eating disorder is being caught in a destructive cycle of compulsive behavior characterized by low self worth, secretiveness, isolation, feelings of loss of control, guilt and great misery. Coping with an eating disorder is a considerable challenge for sufferers and their families. As with other addictions recovery is very possible, and compulsive behavior can be changed.

Eating disorders most commonly begin in adolescence, particularly in girls and young women

There is no single cause for eating disorders. All are rooted in emotions, however, which are triggered by one or more factors or events, including cultural and family pressures, chemical imbalances, and emotional and personality disorders.

Alcool

acomete de 10% a 12% da população mundial e 11,2% dos brasileiros que vivem nas 107 maiores cidades do país;

a incidência é maior entre os mais jovens, especialmente na faixa etária dos 18 aos 29 anos, declinando com a idade;

Alcoólatras no Brasil - 15 milhões
