Is your light shining?

“HACK! HACK! HACK!”

There was a story once of a man who traveled around selling cough medicine. Unfortunately, he had a rather tough time selling his medicine. Not that it wasn’t a good product, or that he wasn’t a good salesman, for he was. The problem was his horrible, persistent cough. Right in the middle of his sales pitch, he would drop to his knees coughing and sputtering and gasping for breath. At which point, most would leave. And rarely would anyone buy. Finally one day, someone from the crowd yelled out, “Why don’t you buy some of your own medicine and show us how it works!”

That is what the world is crying out to us as we try to “sell” them Jesus. Lots speak of what Jesus can and will do in someone’s life, but far fewer actually show. And it is at precisely this point that many of the world turn and walk away. Something is lost as we lay on the ground half sputtering, half talking in our sin and trying to tell them how God can heal them. You can’t sell what you haven’t bought. And you can’t give what you don’t have. Unfortunately, the world is not half as stupid or unobservant as we think they are. It is not supposed to be this way. God has called us to be lights.

Mt 5:14-16; You are the light of the world—like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your good deeds shine for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly father.

We are called to be lights. To show the world the truth as it shines through our lives. Talk is cheap. They want and need to see it. We need to stop and examine our lives to see if we truly are shining. Certainly no one is perfect, but that is no excuse for complacency and compromise. I recently came into contact with a poll here in Brazil in which over the course of the last five years, 5,000 professing Christian youth from 22 different denominations were asked as to their sexual practices. What came out of that poll scared and woke me up. Here are their findings:

- 52% of professing Christian youth have lost their virginity as Christians

26% of those who have lost their virginity are currently sexually active

The average age for a Christian young man to lose his virginity is 14

The average age for a Christian young woman to lose her virginity is 16

17% of theses girls between 14 and 18 years old are already mothers or pregnant with their first child

Now, can you imagine a professing Christian girl, who just happens to be pregnant, witnessing to a non-Christian youth and trying to tell him or her about their need for Jesus and how He can change their life? Or a Christian young man as he has just finished having sex with a non-Christian young woman rolling over and trying to tell her of Jesus and her need of salvation? It just doesn’t work. If our lives don’t show changes and something different, then our faith is worthless to the world. They want to see what God can do and has done. We have to stop coughing in order for them to even become interested in our medicine.

I remember recently being at a wedding in which a young man came up to me, and as he was drooling and falling all over me with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other, I was trying to think of an angle in which to tell him about Jesus when a Christian youth busted in and said, “Oh! I see you’ve met Brian. He’s in the ministry with us.” OK. I’m not one to judge, but his light got put out somewhere in all of the beers. My friends, God wants us to be different, we are called to be different. We are called to be radically different, even weird for Jesus.

One of the biggest roadblocks to non-believers becoming Christians is the lives of the very Christians who are speaking to them of Jesus. We talk the talk but know nothing of the walk. Do you suppose there have been times in your life where a non-Christian has looked at you and said, “I don’t think so”? Do you think there have been times when a non-Christian has been paying more attention to your cough than to your speech? I’m sure that we have all been caught in that one before. But thankfully, our God is a God full of mercy, a God of second chances and a God who heals coughs, even persistent ones. God has called us to be lights. Let your light shine before men.

A sua luz está brilhando?

“HACK! HACK! HACK!”

Ouvir uma vez de uma história de um homem que viajava cidade a cidade vendendo remédio para gripe. Infelizmente, ele não tinha muita sorte vendendo aquele remédio. Não porque não era um bom remédio ou porque ele não era um bom vendedor, porque ele era. O problema é que ele tinha um tosse horrível. Bem no meio do seu dialogo sobre como aquele remédio era tão bom, ele caio para o chão tosando e cuspindo tentando respirar. Geralmente nesse ponto a maioria saiu não querendo ouvir o resto. Finalmente um dia, alguém da multidão gritou, “Porque você mesmo não comprar um pouco do seu remédio e mostrar para nós como ele funciona?”

E isto é exatamente o que o mundo está gritando para nós enquanto nós estamos tentando “vender” Jesus. Muitas falam do que Jesus pode fazer numa vida, mas, poucos mostram. E, é exatamente nesse ponto que muitas do mundo viram as tuas costas e ir embora. Algo está perdido enquanto nós estamos no chão tentando respirar nos nossos pecados e tentando falar de Jesus para o mundo, como Ele pode o curar. Você não pode vender o que você não comprou. E você não pode dar o que você não tem. A verdade é que o mundo não é tão estúpido ou cego como nós como crentes o achamos. E isso não deve ser. Deus tem nos chamado para ser luzes.

Mt 5:14-16; Vós sois a luz do mundo. Não se pode esconder a cidade edificada sobre um monte; nem se acende uma candeia para coloca-la debaixo do alqueire, mas no velador, e alumia a todos os que se encontram na casa. Assim brilhe também a vossa luz diante dos homens, para que vejam as boas obras e glorifiquem a vosso Pai que está nos céus.

Nós somos chamados para ser luzes. Para mostrar ao mundo a verdade enquanto está brilhando através as nossas vidas. É fácil falar. O mundo quer e precisa ver a verdade. Nós precisamos parar e examinar as nossas vidas e ver se nós estamos verdadeiramente brilhando. De certeza, ninguém é perfeito, mas, isso não é uma desculpa para pecado.

Recentemente eu vi uma pesquisa que foi feito durante os últimos cinco anos com 5,000 jovens evangélicos (crentes) de 22 denominações diferentes em relação das suas vidas sexuais. O resultado dessa pesquisa me pegou de surpresa e me acordou. Os resultados eram seguintes:

52% perderam a sua virgindade como “crentes”

26% desses estão ativas nas suas vidas sexuais (ainda estão praticando)

A idade média para um rapaz (“crente”) perder a sua virgindade é 14 anos

A idade média para uma moça (“crente”) perder a sua virgindade é 16 anos

17% das meninas entre 14 e 18 anos de idade que já perderam a sua virgindade estão grávidas ou já estão com um bebe nos braços

Agora, você pode imaginar uma moça “crente”, grávida, se aproximando e tentando evangelizar uma moça que não é crente e não está grávida. Você pode imaginar ela tentando para aquela que não crer sobre a sua necessidade de Jesus e como Ele pode mudar a sua vida? Ou rapaz “crente” que acabou de transar com uma menina tentando falar para ela sobre a sua necessidade de salvação enquanto ainda está nu? Não funciona assim. Se as nossas vidas não mostram algo diferente, então, a nossa fé não tem valor para o mundo. Eles querem ver o que Deus pode fazer e tem feito em nossas vidas. Nós precisamos cuidar do nosso tosse para o mundo ter qualquer interesse no nosso remédio.

Recentemente eu estava num casamento em que um rapaz me aproximou, e enquanto ele estava babando caindo encima de mim com uma cerveja numa mão e um cigarro na outra, eu estava pensando em que eu podia falar de Jesus para ele, um jovem crente pulou dentro da situação e falou, “Hei! Legal, você já conhece o Brian. Ele está no ministério conosco.” Bom. Eu não sou um para julgar, mas, a luz dele se afagou dentro de todas as cervejas. Meu amigo, Deus está nos chamando a ser diferente. Nós somos chamados a ser radicais, até um ouço estranho se necessário para Jesus.

Um dos maiores impedimentos para os incrédulos não virar crentes é as vidas dos próprios crentes que estão tentando ganhar eles. Nós falamos o falar, mas não andamos o andar. Será que eram vezes na sua vida quando um incrédulo olhou para você e falou, “Eu acho que não”? Você acha que eram vezes em que um incrédulo estava prestando mais atenção no teu tosse do que os eu dialogo? Eu estou de certeza que todos de nós já fomos pegos nessa. Mas, graças a Deus, nosso Deus é um Deus que está cheio de misericórdia, um Deus de segundas chances e um Deus que cura as nossas “tosses”, até aqueles que parecem que nunca vão sair. Deus tem nos chamados a ser luzes. Deixe a sua luz brilhar diante dos homens.
